The Christian Discipleship Course of Beth-Haran

This is just a basic outline, the actual course is based on the girl’s individual needs and the timing of the girl’s arrival, therefore some studies may not be necessary while others may receive extra attention.

Her one-year course will be developed using the following outline.

Salvation

The most essential topic is salvation and the Lordship of Christ in her life. We will teach how the cross makes an atonement and reconciles us to God. Why God chose the cross to save us, and how His love is displayed through this.

We will learn God’s attributes, and our responsibility before God. As the disciple builds a relationship with God, everything else will fall in place.

Where does obedience fit in to our Christian walk? According to the Scriptures, it does have a place in the life of those who love God.

We will discuss specific works such as repentance (and what to do when we fail), water baptism (as an act of obedience), honesty, forgiveness, perseverance of the saints.

Christian disciplines

She will be encouraged to develop a regular habit of Bible reading, prayer, and seeking the Lord’s will in her daily life. Silence, solitude and meditation the Word of God are essential to her growth in Christ.

A few of the other topical Bible studies will be:

ü  contentment and to wait on the Lord.

ü  love and charity.

ü  holiness (one of our textbooks will be The Enemy Within, by J. I. Packer).

ü  reaping what you sow.

ü  progressive sanctification.

ü  gifts of the Spirit. (false vs. true gifts, false vs. true prophets)

ü  Christian missions and missionary opportunities for the Christian disciple.

ü  denying ourselves and carrying our cross.

ü  why we suffer and how we as Christians deal with suffering.

ü  how we as Christians pick our music, books and movies and the value of silence. We will look at the cultural pressure helping us make these decisions.

ü  on Satan, that old serpent. Is he a real being? What does the Bible teach about the spiritual realm? The occult? What is the difference between the flesh, the devil and the world?

The heart

Christianity is not a rulebook; it is a change of heart. Topical studies on the heart will include the following. What the Bible teaches about:

ü  the fear of the Lord.

ü  our tongue and how it reveals our heart.

ü  our imaginations and how to control them.

ü  the source of fear, worry and anxiety and how to overcome them.

ü  the empty life and depression.

ü  the sober mind and addictions.

ü  pride, contention, hypocrisy, anger.

Christian stewardship

She will learn good work ethics, and overcome wastefulness and laziness. We have many opportunities to put the things she learns into practice during our work crews and on other occasions around the farm.

In the area of stewardship, it is important that she learn how to pick good friends that will help her grow in the Lord. (Ephesians 5:11-12)

In order to be a wise steward she will have a short study on consumer economics. We will teach a philosophy of living on a budget and the problems that come with (credit card) debt.

Our students will learn why we, as Christians, should not be on the government dole. We will teach that it is the responsibility of the church to provide welfare. (See James 1:27)

Some other areas of stewardship include:

ü  ministry.

ü  accountability.

ü  tithe and offerings.

ü  the Christian pro-life position.

ü  voting.

Romantic Relationships

Girls today, as well as men, need to be taught how to control their inner passions and imaginations. We will discuss how modesty, vanity and inner beauty in the context of the Scriptures. The course will include the reasons for abstinence. Our students will be taught how to avoid being pressured into sex.

What are the differences between betrothal, courting, and dating? What are the advantages and dangers of each? What does God expect of us in a Christian relationship? (One textbook will be I Kissed Dating Goodbye – by Josh Harris.)

Another Bible course we cover is on the family, husband-wife relationships and child rearing being the most central. Good marriages and good children do not happen by accident, nor do the methods approved by the world offer promising results. (One textbook will be Train up a Child – Mike Pearl)

Bible courses

Each weekday she will have a class where she will just go through different books of the Bible, learning to take in God’s word in its proper context.

In our hermeneutics class she will learn some of the do’s and don’ts of personal Bible study.

She will study the history of the Bible and how it was passed down to us today. How the Bible is divided into different sections. She will look at some of the different Bible versions, and we will show why we prefer the King James Version.

We will compare many of the differences between modern psychology and the teachings of Jesus.

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”  Colossians 2:8

She will learn how to recognize and avoid cults. We will discuss ideas on how to reach cult members with the hope of bringing them out.

Jesus gave us His great commission. (Mark 16:15) Some of the tools that can help us to fulfill this commission are:

ü  creation science.

ü  Bible prophecies of the end times.

ü  prophecies of Jesus Christ in Old Testament.

ü  Nicene Creed.

Conclusion

This is a basic outline of the course material covered at Beth-Haran. We understand that not all this material will be relevant to every student. Each girl has different experiences and needs and will require individual help tailored to those needs. Pray for us that God will make Beth-haran much more than a classroom.
